A novel multigene family may encode odorant receptors.

چکیده
The mammalian olfactory system can recognize and discriminate a large number of different odorant molecules. The detection of chemically distinct odorants presumably results from the association of odorous ligands with specific receptors on olfactory sensory neurons. To address the problem of olfactory perception at a molecular level, we have cloned and characterized 18 different members of an extremely large multigene family that encodes seven transmembrane domain proteins whose expression is restricted to the olfactory epithelium. The members of this novel gene family are likely to encode a diverse family of odorant receptors.

متن کاملAnnotated Classic The Molecular Basis for Odor Recognition
We are pleased to present a series of Annotated Classics celebrating 40 years of exciting biology in the pages of Cell. This installment revisits “A Novel Multigene Family May Encode Odorant Receptors: A Molecular Basis for Odor Recognition” by Linda Buck and Richard Axel. Here, Stuart Firestein, Charles Greer, and Peter Mombaerts comment on many discoveries foreshadowed by the identification o...
متن کاملA New Multigene Family of Putative Pheromone Receptors
The vomeronasal organ (VNO) mediates detection of pheromones related to social and reproductive behavior in most terrestrial vertebrates. We have identified a new multigene family of G protein-linked receptors (V2Rs) that are specifically expressed in the VNO. V2Rs have no significant homology to other putative pheromone receptors (V1Rs) or to olfactory receptors but are related to the Ca2+-sen...
متن کاملSNIFFING OUT SMELL: Odorant Detection, Coding, and Perception
Smell, the most ancient of all senses, is crucial for animal reproduction and survival. Humans can detect the most minute changes in odorant structures as a different perceived odor. Despite its significance, the mechanism of olfactory sensory perception remained unknown before 1991. Through research in my lab and others, we discovered a large multigene family containing approximately 1000 gene...
متن کاملFunctional Identification of a Goldfish Odorant Receptor
The vertebrate olfactory system utilizes odorant receptors to receive and discriminate thousands of different chemical stimuli. An understanding of how these receptors encode information about an odorant's molecular structure requires a characterization of their ligand specificities. We employed an expression cloning strategy to identify a goldfish odorant receptor that is activated by amino ac...
